Rancagua Map Poster & Print
Rancagua is the capital of Chile's O'Higgins Region, about 90 kilometres south of Santiago in the fertile Central Valley. Its historic centre is unusual. The founding plan of 1743 placed the main square where two axes cross, so the Plaza de los Héroes sits at the meeting of four streets in the shape of a cross, a pattern still visible within the surrounding grid.
In 1814 the city was the site of the Battle of Rancagua, when patriot forces under Bernardo O'Higgins were besieged around the square and broke out at great cost. Today Rancagua is closely tied to copper. The El Teniente mine, one of the largest underground copper mines in the world, lies in the mountains to the east.
