Open-pit mines
Giant open pits lie close to the town. Their stepped benches form concentric rings that are unlike any other feature on a city map.

关于地图
Rudnyy Map Poster & Print
Rudnyy in northern Kazakhstan was founded in the 1950s to serve the iron ore deposits of the Sokolov-Sarbai area, and its map shows this purpose clearly. The town is laid out as a regular planned grid of wide streets and apartment blocks. Next to it lie the open-pit mines, huge stepped hollows in the steppe that are larger than many districts of the town.
The Tobol river runs nearby, and the surrounding land is flat, open steppe. The mining and processing complex remains the reason the town exists. Railway lines and industrial sites connect the pits to the processing plants. Across the grid, parks and boulevards reflect Soviet planning ideas about green space in industrial towns.
A Rudnyy map poster shows a rare and striking contrast. On one side is the neat geometry of a planned town. On the other are the concentric terraces of the mines, which look almost like contour drawings. The two forms side by side make a powerful, unusual image in black and white.

Planned street grid
The town is built on a regular grid of broad avenues and residential blocks. From above it looks deliberate and orderly, typical of mid-century Soviet planning.
Steppe and river
The flat steppe surrounds the town, and the Tobol river winds through it nearby. Its curves soften the hard geometry of the town and the mines.
