Sabaudia Map Poster & Print
Sabaudia is in southern Lazio, on land reclaimed from the Pontine Marshes. It was founded in 1934 and built in less than a year as one of the planned new towns of that period. Its rationalist architecture and geometric centre have made it a reference point in the history of Italian urbanism. On a map, the civic core is a clear arrangement of squares and straight axes, set among later, looser streets.
The setting makes the map exceptional. The town stands on the shore of Lake Paola, a long coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a narrow strip of dunes, which runs parallel to a straight Tyrrhenian beach. To the southeast rises Monte Circeo. The lake, the dunes and much of the surrounding land fall within Circeo National Park.
