San Nicolas lies in Ilocos Norte, directly across the river from Laoag, the provincial capital. The two are closely linked, yet on the map the river draws a clear boundary between them, with bridges connecting the banks. The town's centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern common in the Philippines, with streets arranged around a church and plaza.
Beyond the centre, San Nicolas extends into barangays and farmland, where roads become looser and follow field edges and irrigation lines. A San Nicolas map poster shows this transition from the compact core near the river to a wider, more open pattern of rural roads and settlements.
