Sandhurst is in Berkshire, on the county's southern edge, where the Blackwater River marks the boundary with Hampshire and Surrey. The land is sandy heath and pine woodland, and that shows on the map. Streets are laid out among trees and open ground, not in dense blocks, and green space is never far away.
The name is known worldwide because of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where British Army officers are trained. The academy's large grounds, with their lakes, playing fields and woodland, lie just across the county line toward Camberley. On the map they form a large, clearly defined area of open land.
