Santa Barbara Map Poster & Print
Santa Barbara sits on one of the few stretches of the California coast that faces south, on a narrow plain between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific. On the map, the city's grid is set at an angle to north, with State Street running straight from the shore up through downtown towards the foothills.
After an earthquake in 1925, much of downtown was rebuilt in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, and white walls and red tile roofs now define the city's character. Mission Santa Barbara, often called the Queen of the Missions, stands on the rising ground above the grid, with the foothills and canyons behind.
A Santa Barbara map poster shows the city's setting with unusual clarity. Stearns Wharf reaches out into the water, the harbour and breakwater mark the western shore, the grid runs inland in tidy blocks, and the streets begin to curve and loosen as they reach the Riviera and the lower slopes of the mountains.

Above downtown, streets wind across the hillside of the Riviera towards the Mission and the mountains, a looser pattern than the grid below.
