Şarkışla lies in the western part of Sivas province, on the high Anatolian plateau between Kayseri and Sivas. The surrounding landscape is broad and open, a patchwork of grain fields and grazing land broken by low hills. The town itself is compact, with a centre of closely spaced streets and newer blocks spreading outward in straighter lines, a pattern that sits clearly against the empty country around it.
The district is closely associated with Aşık Veysel, one of the most celebrated folk poets and musicians of the Turkish tradition, who was born in the nearby village of Sivrialan. His songs about the land and its people are still widely sung, and the village connected with him draws admirers from across the country who come to see where he lived.
