Sayula lies in the south of Jalisco, on the route between Guadalajara and Ciudad Guzmán. The centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern, a regular grid of streets around a main plaza and parish church. East of town stretches the Laguna de Sayula, a wide, shallow basin that holds water in the rainy season and shrinks to pale open flats in the drier months.
Sayula is often named as the birthplace of Juan Rulfo, author of Pedro Páramo, and it is known across Mexico for cajeta, a sweet caramel made from milk. On paper, the town's even blocks sit between the flat lake bed and the slopes rising to the west. That contrast between level ground and mountain gives the poster a sense of depth.
