Shimo-tsuma lies in western Ibaraki Prefecture, on the broad, flat Kanto plain north of Tokyo. Two rivers shape its map. The Kinu River runs along one side and the smaller Kokai River along the other, both flowing roughly north to south. Between them the town centre forms a modest cluster of streets, and rice paddies and farm roads cover most of the surrounding land in a fine rectangular pattern.
Near the centre lies Sa-numa, a shallow lake with a park along its shore, which appears on the map as a quiet open shape among the streets. The Kanto Railway Joso Line crosses the town in a straight line. Outside Japan the name is best known from the novel and film Kamikaze Girls, whose original title, Shimotsuma Monogatari, refers to this town.

A small, shallow lake near the centre, edged by a park, forms a soft rounded shape that breaks up the regular street pattern around it.
Paddy field grid
Most of the surrounding land is divided into rectangular rice fields and straight farm roads. They give the outer parts of the map a fine, even texture.
