Shimo’ochiai sits in the northwest of Shinjuku, and its name describes what you see on the map. Ochiai means a meeting of waters, and here the Myoshoji River joins the Kanda River before it bends east toward the city centre. The river lines run low in the valley, while the residential grid climbs north onto the higher ground toward Mejiro.
From above, the neighbourhood is a dense mesh of narrow lanes rather than a formal grid. Short streets turn and fork, following old property lines and the contour of the slope. The Seibu Shinjuku Line crosses the valley floor, and the busier stations of Takadanobaba and Mejiro sit just beyond the edges, which gives the map a clear frame of rail lines around a quieter interior.
A Shimo’ochiai map poster suits someone who knows Tokyo at walking pace, not from a skyscraper window. Green patches mark gardens and small parks, including Otomeyama Park on the plateau edge, where spring water once fed the valley. The land rises north toward Mejiro, and the street pattern changes with it. Lanes on the slope are shorter and more irregular than those along the flatter river valley.
Otomeyama Park
A wooded park on the edge of the plateau, once part of a private estate. It appears as a compact green shape surrounded by the tight residential lanes of the neighbourhood.
