Sidi Kacem lies on the edge of the Gharb plain in northern Morocco, a broad, fertile lowland between the Rif foothills and the Atlantic. From above, the town spreads across flat ground, and its layout is shaped by the railway, which divides into branches here and cuts through the street pattern.
Under the French protectorate the town was known as Petitjean, and it grew as a rail junction and an administrative centre for the surrounding farmland. It was also associated with an oil refinery, part of Morocco's early petroleum industry. Around it, the Gharb produces citrus, cereals and other crops.
A Sidi Kacem map poster shows a town organised around infrastructure. The rail lines draw long, sweeping curves across the map, with residential areas and the older centre filling the spaces between.
