Simonésia is a municipality in the eastern part of Minas Gerais, in the hilly Zona da Mata region near the border with Espírito Santo. The landscape here is steep and folded, and coffee is an important crop on the surrounding slopes. On a map, the town fits into the bottom of a valley, with its streets following the gentle curves of the terrain.
The urban area is small. A few main streets run along the valley floor and short cross streets climb up the hillsides. Beyond the edge of town, winding roads lead through farmland and forest to rural communities, and their many switchbacks trace the shape of the hills.
