Stockport Map Poster & Print
Stockport grew in a steep-sided valley southeast of Manchester, at the point where the Rivers Tame and Goyt join to form the Mersey. The town centre follows the valley floor and slopes. Streets climb from the river to the old market place, and later terraced housing spread across the higher ground in every direction.
The railway viaduct opened in 1840 and is one of the largest brick structures in Britain. It carries the line from Manchester across the valley on a long run of arches. On the map it cuts straight across the centre. Below it, the Mersey runs partly hidden beneath the Merseyway shopping precinct, which was built over the river.
A Stockport map poster reflects an industrial past rooted in textiles and especially hat-making, remembered today at the Hat Works museum. Motorways and ring roads now surround the older core. Parks, rivers and suburban streets fill out the frame, and the historic centre sits in the middle of it all.
