Surkhpur lies in the northeastern part of Pakistani Punjab, on the broad alluvial plain between the rivers that come down from the Himalayan foothills. On a map, the landscape around it is almost entirely flat. That lets the human pattern take over: a tight cluster of streets at the centre, roads leaving it in several directions, and smaller villages scattered across the surrounding fields at fairly even distances.
The streets in the older core are narrow and irregular. They follow property lines and old paths more than any planned grid. Toward the edges, the plan loosens into wider roads and newer plots. Irrigation channels and field tracks cut across the countryside in straight segments, dividing the land into a patchwork that shows up clearly when the map is drawn in only two tones.
