The Zeya River
The wide Zeya runs along the town's western edge. It gives the composition a strong natural boundary and a sweep of open water.

关于地图
Svobodnyy Map Poster & Print
Svobodnyy stands on the right bank of the Zeya River in Amur Oblast, in Russia's Far East. It grew up as a settlement for building the Trans-Siberian Railway. The railway still defines its layout, with tracks and station yards running beside a regular grid of streets that stretches away from the river.
The town's name is linked to space travel today. The Vostochny Cosmodrome was built nearby, and earlier a military launch site operated in the area. Around the town, the land opens into river plains and forest, with the wide Zeya forming a natural western boundary.
A Svobodnyy map poster brings out the clarity of the plan. Straight, parallel streets are cut through by the railway, with the broad river bending along one side. Few maps are this orderly, and the monochrome print makes that order easy to see.

Railway grid
The streets follow a regular plan laid out around the Trans-Siberian line. The rail corridor draws a long diagonal through the town.
Taiga edges
Beyond the last streets are open plains and forest. They leave calm negative space around the town's clean geometric form.
