Taganrog sits on a promontory jutting into Taganrog Bay, the north-eastern arm of the Sea of Azov. The historic centre follows a clear rectangular grid, with long streets running parallel to the shore and shorter lanes descending toward it. Water wraps around the cape, and the land drops to the sea in steep banks, so the map feels bounded and precise.
Peter the Great founded Taganrog in 1698 as a naval base, one of Russia's first on a southern sea. The city is the birthplace of Anton Chekhov, and his childhood home and the family shop are preserved as museums. A stone staircase descends from the old town to the waterfront, one of the city's best-known landmarks.
