Tanna Map Poster & Print
Tanna lies in the south of Vanuatu. It is a compact, somewhat oval island with mountains inland and a coast of black sand beaches, reefs and headlands. From above, there are few roads, and most are unpaved, crossing the island between the west and east coasts. Villages are scattered among gardens and forest rather than grouped into towns, so the map is mostly terrain and shoreline.
Lenakel, on the west coast, is the island's main settlement and trading centre, and the airstrip at Whitegrass lies a short way to the north. On the east side, the active volcano Mount Yasur rises above a wide ash plain. Just beyond it is Port Resolution, a sheltered bay that James Cook named after his ship, which anchored there in 1774.
Mount Yasur is famous as one of the easiest active volcanoes in the world to visit, and visitors stand on the crater rim at night. The island is also known for its strong traditional customs, including the John Frum movement at Sulphur Bay. A Tanna map poster holds all of this within one outline, framed by the Pacific.
