Tébessa Map Poster & Print
Tébessa lies in northeastern Algeria on a high plateau close to the Tunisian border, surrounded by open steppe and low mountains. At the heart of the city is a compact historic core enclosed by Byzantine walls, a rectangular outline still clearly visible on the map. Newer districts spread outward in more regular blocks across the plateau.
The city was the Roman town of Theveste, an important military and trading centre in the province of Africa. Its Roman heritage is exceptionally well preserved: the Arch of Caracalla, the Temple of Minerva and a large early Christian basilica complex stand within or near the old town, alongside the Byzantine walls built in the sixth century.
