Tingo María lies in the Huánuco region of Peru, where the eastern slopes of the Andes meet the Amazon lowlands. The town sits beside the Huallaga river, and on a map its streets form a grid squeezed between the water and steep, forested hills that rise abruptly on either side.
The most famous feature of the landscape is the Bella Durmiente, or Sleeping Beauty, a mountain ridge whose profile resembles a reclining woman. Nearby Tingo María National Park protects forest, rivers and the Cueva de las Lechuzas, a cave known for its colonies of oilbirds.
