Unalaska is one of the larger islands in Alaska's Aleutian chain. Its coast is broken by long bays and inlets that reach far into the mountains, leaving narrow peninsulas between them. The town of Unalaska and the port of Dutch Harbor, partly on neighbouring Amaknak Island, form the only real street network on the north side. Bridges and short roads link them.
Dutch Harbor is one of the largest fishing ports in the United States by the volume of catch landed. In June 1942 it was bombed by Japanese aircraft, part of the Aleutian campaign of the Second World War. Makushin Volcano rises in the island's interior and is often covered in snow and cloud.
