Harbour and dike
The harbour front runs along the top of the dike facing the Markermeer. On the map it forms a strong line where the old village meets the water.

关于地图
Volendam Map Poster & Print
Volendam lies on the shore of the Markermeer in North Holland, part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam. Its shape on a map is long and narrow. The old village follows the dike along the water, with the harbour at its centre, and the newer districts spread inland behind it in wider streets and planned residential blocks.
Volendam was a fishing village on the Zuiderzee until the Afsluitdijk closed the sea off in 1932 and turned it into a freshwater lake. The village kept its harbour, its fishing culture and its traditional dress, which still appear in photographs and in local celebrations. Smoked eel remains closely linked with the town.
A Volendam map poster brings out the contrast between the tight old quarter by the dike, where narrow alleys wind between wooden houses, and the orderly streets further inland. The broad open water of the Markermeer fills one side of the frame, giving the village a clear, calm edge.

Old alleys
Behind the dike, the oldest part of the village is a tangle of very narrow lanes and small houses, a fine, dense pattern that stands out in black and white.
Markermeer shore
The lake takes up much of the frame. Its wide surface balances the detailed street pattern and shows the former sea that shaped the village.
