Weilheim in Oberbayern sits in the Pfaffenwinkel, the prealpine landscape south-west of Munich. The River Ammer runs along the town's edge. At the centre is a compact historic core whose oval outline still follows the course of its former fortifications. Newer districts spread around it in a looser ring, and farmland and woods begin soon after.
The town is the administrative seat of its district and a market centre for the surrounding villages. Its old town clusters around a main square lined with gabled houses and churches. The railway from Munich toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen passes through Weilheim, which makes it a gateway to the mountains further south.
