Weißenfels Map Poster & Print
Weißenfels lies on the Saale in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, between Halle and Naumburg. The old town sits on one bank below a ridge, and from above its streets form a compact, irregular core around the market square. Bridges link it to the opposite side of the river, and later residential districts spread up the slopes and along the valley in both directions.
Above the centre stands Schloss Neu-Augustusburg, built in the 17th century as the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels, whose court made the town a notable centre of music for several decades. The composer Heinrich Schütz grew up here and returned in old age, and his house is now a museum. The poet Novalis also lived in Weißenfels and is buried in the town.
