Xalatlaco sits high in the State of Mexico, on the uplands between the Toluca Valley and the mountains that separate it from Mexico City. From above, the town reads as a tight cluster of blocks around a central square, with streets thinning out into long, narrow agricultural plots before the land rises and the fields give way to forest.
The contrast is what makes the map interesting. At the centre, short streets meet at near-right angles and form small, dense blocks. Further out, lanes follow field boundaries and the lie of the land, bending and splitting as they head uphill. On paper, the lines look almost like woven fabric fading into open space.
