Yeovil sits in south Somerset, close to the Dorset border, on rising ground above the valley of the River Yeo. The old town centre is a cluster of irregular streets around the parish church. Later housing spreads over the surrounding slopes in winding estates that follow the countryside's gentle folds.
One of the most unusual things on the map is a green wedge reaching almost to the centre. Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, runs down a wooded valley from the edge of town, so countryside comes much closer to the shops than it does in most towns.
Yeovil has long been associated with aircraft and, more recently, helicopters. The Westland works and its airfield take up a large, flat area on the western side. A Yeovil map poster shows the old market town, its industrial airfield and its green valleys side by side.
