Youngstown Map Poster & Print
Youngstown follows the Mahoning River, which winds south-east through the middle of the city in a broad valley. For more than a century that valley was lined with steel mills. The downtown grid sits on the river's north bank around Central Square and Federal Street. Residential streets climb the slopes on either side, and interstate ramps loop around the centre, which gives the street pattern clear layers.
The city's identity was shaped by steel, and the decline of the mills in the late 1970s is still a turning point in its story. Today Youngstown State University occupies a campus just north of downtown. The Youngstown map poster shows how the river, the old industrial flats, the university and the neighbourhoods fit together as one connected shape.
One of the most distinctive features from above is Mill Creek Park. This long, narrow belt of woodland, lakes and gorges runs through the south and west of the city. On a monochrome print it appears as a quiet green seam through dense residential blocks, one of the largest municipal parks of its kind in the country.
