Afif lies in the Riyadh Region of Saudi Arabia, in the western part of the Najd plateau. It sits on the long highway route between Riyadh and the Hejaz, and has grown into a regional centre for the surrounding desert communities, with services, schools and markets serving a wide area.
From above, Afif shows the planned layout typical of modern towns on the Arabian plateau. Wide roads divide the town into large rectangular blocks, and neighbourhoods fill the grid at a steady density.
