Águas Santas is a parish in the municipality of Maia, just northeast of Porto. On a map, it is part of the continuous built-up area around the city. Residential blocks, local streets and small squares sit alongside the major roads and motorway junctions that carry traffic in and out of Porto.
The name means holy waters. Like many parishes around Porto, the area grew from older villages that were gradually absorbed into the metropolitan area. On a map, that history shows in winding older roads threaded between newer, more orderly housing developments, with patches of green where stream valleys have been left open.
