Aiud lies in Alba County in central Transylvania, in the broad valley of the Mureș River with the hills of the Apuseni Mountains to the west. On a map, the town's heart is its medieval citadel, an enclosed shape in the centre from which the old streets spread outward.
The citadel contains churches and historic buildings and is among the best preserved fortified complexes in the region. Around it, the town extends in a mix of older irregular streets and later, more regular blocks, with the railway and main road running along the valley.
