Anakapalle lies in the coastal plain of northern Andhra Pradesh, a short way inland from Visakhapatnam. On a map, the town spreads along the Sarada River and the main highway and railway from Chennai to Kolkata. The old centre is a dense cluster of market streets, and newer areas extend along the main roads.
Around the town, the plain is broken by rocky hills, and the land is covered with paddy fields and sugarcane. Just east of town are the Buddhist sites of Bojjanakonda and Lingalakonda, where rock-cut caves and stupas were carved into the hillsides many centuries ago.
Anakapalle is known for its jaggery market, one of the largest in India, fed by the sugarcane fields of the district. In 2022 it became the headquarters of a new district.
