Āshkhāneh is the administrative centre of Maneh and Samalqan county in North Khorasan province, in the mountainous northeast of Iran. From above, the town occupies a valley floor with ridges rising on either side. Its streets fill the flat land in a fairly regular pattern, and main roads run along the length of the valley.
The surrounding countryside is agricultural where water allows and open elsewhere, with dry slopes and seasonal streams draining off the hills. On the map, the transition from town to fields to bare slopes is clear, and villages appear as small clusters strung along the valley roads.
