Bạch Mai lies south of the historic core of Hanoi, in a part of the city where main streets are lined with shophouses and the blocks behind them are threaded with narrow alleys. From above, the ward is a fine, intricate pattern of lanes, broken by the larger footprint of hospital buildings and the straight line of the street that shares its name.
Bạch Mai Hospital is one of the largest medical centres in Vietnam, and it has long shaped the life of the surrounding streets. It was badly damaged during the bombing of Hanoi in December 1972 and was rebuilt afterwards. Today the area is a mix of homes, small businesses and clinics, typical of the inner south of the city.
