Banhā lies in the southern Nile Delta, on the eastern bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile, north of Cairo. From above, the city is a dense cluster of streets pressed against the river, surrounded by a fine patchwork of fields and irrigation canals that is typical of the Delta.
It is the capital of Qalyubia governorate and an important rail and road junction on the routes north from Cairo. A Banhā map poster shows how the railway and main roads converge on the city, with a bridge crossing the river and the city's neighbourhoods fanning out from the station area.
