Zefta lies in Gharbia Governorate in the Nile Delta, on the west bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile. Directly across the water is the town of Mit Ghamr. From above, the two towns look almost like one settlement divided by the river, connected by the bridges that cross it.
Zefta has a distinct place in modern Egyptian history. During the 1919 revolution against British rule, local leaders briefly declared an independent "Republic of Zefta", and the episode is still remembered as a symbol of that uprising.
A Zefta map poster shows the river running through the composition and the dense streets on both banks. Around them, the fine field pattern of the Delta extends in every direction, divided by canals and country roads. It is a compact and clearly structured view of a Delta river town.
