Berat lies in central Albania, on both banks of the Osum River where it cuts through a narrow gorge. The town's historic core, listed by UNESCO together with Gjirokastër, is known as the city of a thousand windows for the rows of Ottoman-era houses stacked up the slopes. From above, the river runs through the middle and the old districts climb the hills on either side.
The Mangalem quarter rises on one bank below the castle, and the Gorica quarter faces it across the water, linked by the stone Gorica bridge. At the top of the hill, the Kalaja is an inhabited citadel with its own lanes and churches. Newer parts of Berat spread out on flatter ground downstream.
