Bhainsdehi is in Betul district in southern Madhya Pradesh, on the uplands of the Satpura range. The map shows a compact town centre with narrow streets, a few main roads leaving in different directions, and then open, gently rolling country with fields, streams and patches of forest.
The town is the headquarters of its tehsil and serves many surrounding villages, including large Adivasi communities, as a market and administrative centre. It is also near the source of the Purna River, which flows south toward Maharashtra, and the site is visited as a place of pilgrimage.
