Bungoma is the main town of Bungoma County in western Kenya, close to the border with Uganda. On a map it forms around a few key lines: the main highway toward Malaba and the border, and the railway that has run through this part of Kenya since the colonial era. Commercial streets gather near these routes, and residential areas spread outward into farmland.
The surrounding county is a major agricultural area, especially known for sugarcane and maize, and the slopes of Mount Elgon lie to the north. The town is also a centre of Bukusu culture, whose traditional circumcision ceremonies draw large gatherings in certain years.
