Dilijan is in Tavush province in northern Armenia, in a deep valley surrounded by dense forest. It has been known as a resort town since the Soviet era, when people came for the mountain air and mineral water, and it is often called Armenia's Switzerland. From above, the forest dominates the map. The town fits into the valley floor and climbs the slopes wherever the ground allows.
The Aghstev River flows through the town, and the main roads follow its course. Streets branch uphill in switchbacks and short spurs. A small restored historic quarter preserves traditional houses and crafts workshops. The surrounding Dilijan National Park protects the forest, and the medieval monasteries of Haghartsin and Goshavank are within easy reach.
A Dilijan map poster is shaped by terrain in a way few towns are. It shows a narrow band of streets along the river, with curving roads climbing the hillsides and a lot of empty, wooded space around them. In recent years the town has also become home to an international school, which has brought it new attention.

Switchback streets
Roads climb the steep slopes in bends and loops to reach the upper neighbourhoods. On the poster they create curving lines that show the mountain terrain without shading.
