Gujar Khan lies in Rawalpindi District, on the Potohar Plateau between Rawalpindi and Jhelum. From above, the most striking thing is the land around it. The plateau is cut by ravines and seasonal streams, so fields and villages sit on flatter ground between eroded gullies. The Grand Trunk Road and the railway run through the town.
The town grew as a market and transport centre on this historic route. Its older bazaar area is dense, with narrow streets. Newer housing extends along the main road and out toward the surrounding villages. The area is known in Pakistan for the many people from local families who have served in the armed forces or moved abroad.
