Gummi lies in Zamfara State in north-western Nigeria, in the savanna belt of the Sokoto-Rima river system. On the map, the town is a compact cluster of streets and compounds. Around it the land opens into wide farmland, with river channels and low-lying floodplain nearby. A few roads link the town with neighbouring settlements.
It is the headquarters of a local government area of the same name. Like much of this region, the town's life is closely connected to farming and the seasonal rhythm of the river, which floods the low ground in the rainy season and leaves fertile soil behind.
