Itiúba lies in the interior of Bahia, in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil known as the sertão. The town sits near the Serra de Itiúba, a range of hills that rises above the surrounding plains, and on a map the built area appears as a compact cluster of streets at the foot of higher ground, with roads leading off into the dry countryside.
The municipality covers a large, lightly populated area, and much of its population lives in rural communities spread across it. The town centre itself follows a simple layout, with a main square and a modest grid of streets around it, typical of small towns in the region.
