Jhālu lies in the Bijnor district of western Uttar Pradesh, on the fertile plain between the Ganges and the foothills further north. The land here is almost entirely flat and intensively farmed, and the town appears on the map as a dense cluster of streets set within a wide sweep of fields.
The street pattern is tight and irregular at the centre, where lanes wind between closely built houses and markets, and gradually loosens towards the edges. Roads leave town in several directions towards nearby villages and larger centres in the district, and they give the composition its main lines.
