Jilib lies in the Middle Juba region of southern Somalia, on the low, flat country near the Juba River. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set within a much larger landscape of cultivated plots, scrub and seasonal water. There is no relief to shape the plan, so the roads cross the plain freely.
The Juba valley is one of the few parts of Somalia with a permanent river, and farming has long depended on it. The land around Jilib shows this. Field boundaries and tracks run across the floodplain, and the town itself is the densest point in a thin network of routes.
A Jilib map poster reduces the town to its outline. The centre is a tight knot of lines, and the tracks around it spread out into the open landscape. Most of the sheet stays empty, and that emptiness is what makes the design work: a small settlement drawn clearly against a wide, flat river country.
