Kabalo sits on the banks of the Lualaba, the upper course of the Congo River, in Tanganyika province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The river is the dominant feature of the map, a broad band of water running past the town, with the settlement spread along its bank and roads leading inland.
The town grew as a transport junction where the railway meets the river. A line runs east from here toward Kalemie on Lake Tanganyika, and the river connects the town with ports further north. On a map, the straight railway and the winding Lualaba cross at Kabalo, a meeting of two very different lines.
Beyond the town, the land opens into savanna and wooded country, crossed by few roads and scattered villages. A Kabalo map poster is a spare, strongly composed image, chosen above all by people with a personal connection to the town, the river or the railway that made it.
