Kalāleh sits in the northeast of Golestan province in Iran, on the open plain long associated with Turkmen communities. From above, the town is compact. Its streets form a fairly regular pattern set against farmland that stretches out in broad, even parcels.
To the south and east the land begins to lift toward wooded hills, the edge of the green belt that separates the Caspian lowlands from the drier interior. On a detailed map, this shift shows in how roads start to bend and follow contours, where on the flat ground they run straight.
