Kalyani lies in the Nadia district of West Bengal, north of Kolkata, near the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. It is one of the few planned towns in the region. On a map, its sections of blocks, straight roads and open spaces stand out clearly from the denser, irregular settlements around it.
Before the town was planned, the site was an American military base during the Second World War, known then as Roosevelt Town. After independence it was developed as a new town, and its residential areas were divided into lettered blocks. It is home to the University of Kalyani and more recently to AIIMS Kalyani.
