Karambi lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the steep highland country that falls toward the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. This is a landscape of ridges, terraced slopes and narrow valleys, where settlements follow the high ground and roads wind to stay on workable gradients. On a map, the pattern is organic and flowing rather than gridded.
The built area is scattered rather than concentrated. Homes and small clusters sit along ridge roads, with farmland and tree plantations on the slopes between them. Valley floors are marked by streams draining toward the lake. The result is a map drawn almost entirely by terrain, with lines that curve, fork and double back.
