Mangai lies in Kwilu Province in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a region shaped by broad rivers and the forest and savanna between them. From above the town is compact, a pattern of unpaved streets and small plots with tracks leading out into farmland and woodland.
Like many towns in the Kasai basin, Mangai grew as a local centre for trade and river transport, linking farming villages to the wider province. Its layout is informal and practical, with the landscape around it doing most of the work of defining its shape.
