Marblehead occupies a rocky peninsula on Massachusetts' North Shore, and its map is shaped by water. The harbour cuts deep into the town, sheltered on its seaward side by Marblehead Neck, which is joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The coastline is ragged with coves, points and ledges.
The old town near the harbour has some of the most irregular streets in New England.
