Marneuli lies in Kvemo Kartli, in south-eastern Georgia, about half an hour's drive south of Tbilisi. It sits on a broad, low plain, one of the country's main agricultural areas. From above, the town appears as a fairly regular block of streets surrounded by fields, orchards and irrigation channels.
The town is the centre of a region with a large ethnic Azerbaijani community, and it has long been a trading hub for the surrounding villages. Roads lead out from Marneuli toward the borders with Armenia and Azerbaijan, and that position at a crossroads shows clearly on the map.
